Trekking in Sardinia: 5 routes

The Walking of Santa Barbara

If you like history, the Walking of Santa Barbara (Cammino di Santa Barbara) is definitely your trekking route in Sardinia. This path develops in a circular direction, including Sulcis, Iglesiente and Guspinese.

The Camino di Santa Barbara is included in the Historical Environmental Geomining Park of Sardinia. The route develops along the mining paths and mule tracks which, since the beginning of the 19th century, have seen many miners at work. The path then includes cliffs, woods and once-active mines, as well as ghost villages.

The 500km (including variants of the standard route) of the path dedicated to the patron saint of miners has mule tracks, dirt roads and some steeper points which, with a little attention, can be overcome without too much effort.

The cliffs, i.e. the rocky escarpments that characterize the Sinis area, offer a path 20 meters above the sea, with quartz beaches and glimpses of incredible beauty. The Sinis cliffs are not only famous for the charm of the place but also for the falasco little houses.

These huts, once numerous in this area, were born as shelters for fishermen and as warehouses for tools. Characterized by the falasco, which is a marsh grass, they rise directly on the seashore.

The path that leads to the summit lasts about 5 hours. Goats and wild horses could become your traveling companions. Once you get to the top, you can admire the Armidda and Arci mountains, the Montiferru mountain and the Supramonte plateaus. You will find yourself in the middle of a panorama that you absolutely cannot miss.

In the southeastern area of Sardinia, there are the Septem Frates, i.e. the seven brothers. These are granite peaks of different heights and interspersed with very deep gorges. Known by this name although the “brothers” are more than seven, the mountain complex is located in the heart of the homonymous forest.

The area has rich vegetation and very varied fauna. In addition, there are many streams that flow between the peaks.

Like other Italian regions, Sardinia also has its Canyons! Among them, the Gorropu Canyon stands out. With a 1.5 km deep gorge, the Canyon was dug by the erosive action of the Rio Flumineddu.

Its walls reach 500 meters in height and are home to animal species such as wild cats, moufflons, foxes and golden eagles. Even the flora finds fertile ground. Here, in fact, herbaceous species grow that are not present anywhere else in the world. For example, the Nuragic Columbine, also called Gorropu, is present only in these places.

This trekking in Sardinia winds through large limestone rocks, through a path lasting about 2 hours.
